Secrets of Pavis
Fierce trainee Earth Priestess from the Rubble
You are a resident of the Big Rubble, a massive ruined city, once a shining magical metropolis called Pavis, that sits astride a river called the River of Cradles (or the Zola Fel) that separates the chaparral of Prax to the west from the wastelands of Vultures Country to the east.
The Big Rubble is surrounded by walls. The beleaguered native population, descendants of the original inhabitants, share the ruins with trolls, who captured the city and sealed its walls for hundreds of years, hunting the human inhabitants, beast-riding nomads, who originally broke the walls of the city, and monsters, attracted by the strange magics of the city.
You were born in Mani’s Fort, a strongly-walled section of the original city that has survived the hundreds of years of ruin and destruction that befell most of the rest of the Rubble. It is named after Mani Tor, a hero who reincarnates occasionally into his bloodline.
Your aged grandmother is the hereditary Priestess of Ernalda, the Earth Goddess, who is the source of healing and fertility magic for the clan. Your mother was supposed to take her place, and married a great warrior, Sarrijja Tigo. Many said that their firstborn would be the next reincarnation of Mani.
However, before you were born, your father was ambushed and killed by a warband of trolls. In the process, the tribe lost Mani’s Ring, which he carried. This was a great shame to the clan. When you were born a girl, that was taken as evidence of a curse, and you and your mother were thrown out of the Fort.
You would surely have perished was your mother not rescued by a guardsman from the Real City, another fortified enclave, built around the temple of the legendary founder of the city, Pavis himself. This kind soul, poor though he was, cared deeply for you and your mother, and your mother’s blessing by Ernalda was obvious in the 8 healthy siblings, aged between 15 and 2, that you have.
Your mother believes that if you can find Mani’s Ring, you will demonstrate that you are not cursed, and will be readmitted to the Mani clan, and reclaim your family’s possessions and honor.
But your mother is also certain that you have a powerful enemy in the clan, a trollfriend, who arranged her husband’s ambush, and who has arranged several attacks on you in the past, all of which have failed. She has taught you her mother’s magic as best she can, and the Earth Priestess of the Real City has also helped.
You had heard about a gang of trolls near Griffin Gate who had possession of a magic ring. You were investigating this when you were set upon by a Jack-o-Bear, who hypnotized you and took you into its lair for supper, before a group of heroes rescued you.
