Secrets of Pavis
Blind King's Palace
During the time of Pavis’ glory, this was a palace of an important noble family. At some point during the time of the Seventeen Foes or the Troll Occupation, it became known as the Blind King’s Palace. No-one knows who the Blind King is or was. It is known as a place of grim power, and its ownership has changed hands many times, but it has somehow always been maintained as a palace of sorts, even though it goes through periods of dilapidation. Most recently, it has been known as the residence of a mysterious sorcerer from Ralios, Artizun Spellthane, aided by his brother, Diker and half-brother, Zega. Artizun’s abilities were well-developed, and he used his unusual magics to gain great wealth and power, extracting tribute in terms of money and slaves from the whole of the Blind King’s Hill and its surroundings. Diker and Zega, however, grew jealous of their brother’s power and hatched a plot to betray him. The problem was their brother’s unusual servant Thraak, a beast from the Rockwoods that was not only physically powerful, but who would gain the knowledge of anyone whose brain he devoured. The brothers hired a Black Fang assassin, and told him that Artizun was plotting to kill Diker, Zega and Thraak. The beast, as expected, slew the assassin, but on devouring his brain became aware of what he believed was Artizun’s ploy. He slew Artizun using his newly-acquired assassin abilities and devoured the sorcerer’s brain. The immense amount of knowledge, coupled with knowing the truth that his master had no hostile intent towards him, drove the beast mad, and he now believes he is Artizun. As a result, the brothers have not been able to help themselves to Artizun’s wealth, and have fallen out. Their hold over the hill has been broken, and they are now little more than masters of a few rooms in the palace. A troop of baboons has broken in, and others have come to the conclusion that the palace may be ripe for the picking.
One feature of the palace that is little known about is the mysterious Temple of the Shadow Dancers, added during the Troll Occupation by one of the Palace’s previous dark masters. For the duration of his tenure, Artizun always ensured there was a live sacrifice to keep the Shadow Dancers appeased, but since his demise the supply has dried up. Now the Shadow Dancers roam the night again, swooping down and taking away lone stragglers.
